BIO

James Petrucci is a contemporary painter based in Oakview, California, whose work moves between the human figure and abstracted landscapes—images shaped less by accuracy than by feeling. Rooted in a lifelong relationship with drawing and painting, his practice explores memory, emotion, and the quiet mystery of lived experience.

Petrucci’s earliest creative memories come from long, quiet childhood days spent drawing with his mother in Painted Cave, a rustic mountain community above Santa Barbara. Art became both refuge and compass—an unaffected space where he could return to himself through adolescence and into adulthood. Though he did not attend art school, he has remained a devoted student of art, shaped by curiosity, discipline, and a commitment to daily practice.

In his twenties, Petrucci studied closely with mentor Elias Rivera, a masterful figurative painter in the lineage of Velázquez and Titian. Their conversations—about seeing, about life, about perseverance—helped forge the backbone of Petrucci’s approach. Rivera’s advice stayed with him: to be an artist is to be a warrior—steadfast, resilient, and willing to return to the work day after day.

Petrucci’s paintings often feel like layered recollections: landscapes as emotional atmospheres and figures as vessels for inner life. He experiments freely with materials and mediums, blending traditional techniques with exploratory processes as each piece reveals itself over time. His work invites stillness and open interpretation, offering viewers space to sense their own meaning within it.

At the core of Petrucci’s practice is an enduring devotion to wonder—the ongoing pursuit of inspiration, and the quiet pride of continuing to show up for the journey.

“James’s paintings have an unusual ability to hold a room without overpowering it. They bring warmth, depth, and a kind of calm focus—like nature translated into emotion.”
