Artist Statement

I make art because I have to.
Painting is not a choice for me—it is how I listen, how I process experience, memory, and emotion, and how I stay in relationship with the deeper mystery of being alive.

I approach painting as an embodied, intuitive act. The work begins before the brush touches the surface—through sensation, memory, and lived experience. I draw from places I’ve been, moments that linger, and feelings that resist language, allowing the painting to move through me rather than trying to control it. I see myself less as a maker and more as a conduit, responding to what wants to emerge.

My work explores time, growth, healing, and human connection through a shifting visual language. Repeating forms, expansive fields, gestural marks, layered surfaces, and symbolic figures echo natural processes—breath, movement, cycles of becoming, and the memory held in the body. Some works reference organic structures and rhythms; others suggest presence through animals, figures, or abstracted landscapes that feel sensed rather than seen.

I intentionally leave space for the viewer. I believe meaning unfolds through relationship, not explanation. Each painting becomes a meeting point—between stillness and motion, form and feeling, the inner and outer worlds. The work shifts depending on who stands in front of it.

My paintings are meant to be lived with. They ask for slowness and attention. Over time, they reveal themselves—not as answers, but as spaces for reflection, resilience, and return. Quiet yet powerful, the work offers a grounded presence—one that invites healing, introspection, and embodied connection.

- James Petrucci

about James

James Petrucci is a contemporary painter whose work explores time, memory, and emotional resonance through intuitive abstraction. His paintings draw inspiration from nature, lived experience, and the quiet spaces between thought and feeling.

Approaching painting as a channel rather than an act of control, James allows forms, textures, and color to emerge organically. Recurring motifs—such as concentric circles echoing tree rings—reflect growth, age, and the passage of time.

His work is intentionally open-ended, inviting viewers to bring their own interpretations and emotional experiences. Rather than prescribing meaning, the paintings evolve through the relationship between the work and the viewer.

James lives and works in connection with nature, finding inspiration in mountains, light, and the rhythms of the natural world.

Process

James begins each painting intuitively, often working in layers to build depth, texture, and subtle shifts in tone. Transparency, repetition, and rhythm play a central role in his process, allowing the work to develop slowly and deliberately.

He values progress over perfection, allowing each piece to reveal itself over time. Many works reference natural cycles—growth, decay, renewal—mirroring both human experience and the natural world.

Silence, music, and contemplation are integral to the process, creating space for reflection and flow.

Vision

At the heart of James’s practice is a desire to create work that supports stillness, reflection, and emotional connection. His vision is to build a sustainable artistic life—one that balances focused creation with rest, nature, and meaningful relationships.

The studio is not just a workspace, but a sanctuary: a place of clarity, harmony, and openness that supports both the art and the life surrounding it.
